What is VDF?

VDF is Virtual del Fuego, a unique, burner-built website and virtual burn made up of video rooms, events, art, and theme camps. VDF’s parent “physical” burn, Playa del Fuego (PDF), is held on Memorial Day weekend in Tamaqua PA and was cancelled for 2020 and 2021 due to the pandemic. VDF was born from a passion to keep burning!

What is Jitsi?

Jitisi is the open-source video room platform that is integrated with VDF. The rooms are similar to the ubiquitous Zoom room. Detailed information on how to use Jitsi can be found below.

Will VDF work on my device?

Yes, although older devices may not support all VDF and Jitsi features. What we’ve found is that every device and every person is different. We suggest downloading the app, and then experimenting to see if you prefer participating in VDF via the app or a browser. Testers and beta users had strong and different preferences, even when using the same model device.

Is nudity allowed at VDF?

Yes, nudity of a non-erotic nature is allowed in All Ages rooms, just like you might see at a physical Burn.

Is explicit sexual content allowed at VDF?

Yes! We call that 18+. Explicit adult and sexual content is allowed in specially designated rooms, events, art, and theme camps marked as 18+. Minor profiles are systematically barred from seeing any content marked as 18+. Please see below Understanding Adult Content at VDF and the Code of Conduct for more information on when and how adult explicit content is/is not allowed.

Support Services (The R U OK Corral)

What is Support Services? What is the R U OK Corral?

Support Services is made up of Ranger, Sanctuary, and Playa Info Volunteers. The participant facing room for support services is called the R U OK Corral. This is where to go if you have any questions or concerns, need a ranger, or need sanctuary.

When is Support Services / the R U OK Corral available?

Volunteers are available during event hours only: Fri. May 28, 2021 6pm et - Mon. May 31, 2021 3pm et

How do I contact Support Services?
How do I call a Ranger?
How do I get to Sanctuary?

From any page within VDF you can use the Call Support Services button in the top menu bar to submit an incident or call a Ranger.

You can also navigate to the R U OK Corral to speak to a volunteer by clicking the R U OK Corral button on the home page or using the R U OK Corral link embedded in the Contact Support Services form.

Support Services volunteers will help you get the help and support you need!

How do I know what room I’m in?

Move your mouse or touch the screen to see the name of the room at the top center of the screen.

How do I…

The answer is likely the Navigation Bar, which varies by device and app or browser.

Some typical menu bar layouts:

Understanding the Toolbar

Note: The toolbar will vary slightly depending on your device.

Mute / Unmute. Manage audio settings.

     Start / Stop Camera.

    Share your screen.

Open / Close Chat. Within room chat.

Raise your hand. This feature can be hard to see on some devices. You’re probably not being ignored. Probably.

Toggles between tile view and speaker view. Not available on some devices.

General Questions

What are the Ten Principles of Burning Man?

Burning Man co-founder Larry Harvey wrote the Ten Principles in 2004 as guidelines for the then newly-formed Regional Network. They were crafted not as a dictate of how people should be and act, but as a reflection of the community’s ethos and culture as it had organically developed since the event’s inception. VDF operates according to these principles, which can be found here.

What is the mythical Eleventh Principle?

That depends on who you ask, but for VDF the eleventh principle is Consent. What do we mean by consent? Consent is an affirmative, unambiguous, and conscious decision by each participant to engage in mutually agreed-upon activity. The consent has to be ongoing throughout any encounter, and enthusiastic consent is best!

While consent is generally spoken about in terms of sexual activity, it extends beyond this at VDF to include sharing of unwanted sexual, violent, or graphic content and identifying information, and not taking screenshots or resharing content without the express consent of all participants in the screenshot. Please see the Code of Conduct for more information on Consent in online spaces.

Was last year’s VDF the first Virtual Burn?

No, not at all. Burn 2 has been happening on 2nd Life for years and years. VDF was among the first physical burns to go virtual when the pandemic hit, and the first in the United States. Valuable lessons learned at VDF 2020 were taken back to Black Rock City to help bring you the 2020 Burning Man Multiverse.

Is there going to be a Pony Burn?

Yes - if you build it! At VDF everyone builds a Pony! Build it. Burn it. Stream it on the Main Stage at Zero Dark:30.

Why do we burn ponies, anyway?

VDF’s parent “physical” burn, Playa del Fuego or PDF, burns a pony effigy to honor the first PDFs held on Assateague Island, where wild ponies roam free. VDF has kept the same tradition (so far!)

Who runs this event?

The FirePony Creative Society is the fiscal and legal oversight body for VDF and other events including the Burning Man regionals Playa del Fuego and Constellation. A subcommittee of dedicated community members formed under the FirePony umbrella to oversee this particular event and it’s departments (Web Team, Support Services, etc).

Does FirePony Creative Society have paid staff?

No. All FirePony Creative Society events are 100% volunteer run. You can explore opportunities to volunteer at firepony.org/volunteer

Does VDF have a Mayor?

Yes! Our temporary virtual city has a May and so does our parent burn PDF. The Mayor is typically a Board member. For VDF 2021, the Mayor is our newest board member, David Wilkes.

Does VDF/Firepony own any rights to my photos/content?

No. Content remains the exclusive property of its creator.

What forms of payment are available for donations?

We accept Paypal only.

When I go to donate, it says Playa del Fuego Inc. What is that?

Playa del Fuego Inc. is a 501(c)3 nonprofit based in Maryland and the legal name of FirePony Creative Society. The name “FirePony Creative Society” was created as a trade name or “Doing Business As” name for Playa del Fuego Inc. to reflect the organization’s growth beyond just the PDF event. In addition to the Burning Man regionals Playa del Fuego and Constellation, FirePony Creative Society has hosted Mid-Atlantic Leadership Conferences and offers community grants outside burn events through our Community Art and Civic Engagement program, which endeavors to bring the Burner ethos into our local communities.

VDF Code of Conduct and Privacy Policy

Understanding Adult Content at VDF

Unlike some other virtual burns you may have been to, VDF allows explicit sexual adult content in specially designated areas.

To safeguard our minors and our community while allowing a true radical self-expression, VDF requires all participants to self-identify themselves and their 18+ content, to not allow lurkers when 18+ content is present, and to monitor minors in their home.

How is Adult Content defined?

Adult content (“18+”) is defined as any explicit sexual content and / or nudity for erotic purposes or of an erotic nature.

Is nudity allowed at VDF?

Yes, nudity of a non-erotic nature is allowed in All Ages rooms, just like you might see at a physical Burn.

Is explicit sexual content allowed at VDF?

Yes! We call that 18+ Explicit adult and sexual content is allowed in specially designated rooms, events, art, and theme camps marked as 18+.

What about the children? Can they see 18+ content?

Minor profiles are systematically barred from seeing any content marked as 18+ based on the date of birth provided at registration. We recommend that legal guardians be present when a minor creates and uses their account to ensure accurate profile types. Minors under 13 are not able to make accounts.

What does No Lurkers mean?

When 18+ content is currently occurring, all participants in the video room must have their camera enabled to reasonably ensure no minors are present. If no 18+ content is occurring, then cameras do not have to be enabled.

What if I see an obvious minor in an 18+ room?

If explicit sexual content is currently happening - Stop the Conduct Immediately! Then, note the name of the profile and submit a report regarding the profile via the Call Support Services button. Ask the minor to leave.

If no explicit sexual content is occurring, still note the profile name and submit the report, and ask the minor to leave.

The only way minors have access to an 18+ room is either they lied on their profile or they are using an adult’s profile. Either way the profile should be reported via the Call Support Services button.

How does VDF allow 18+ content when other virtual events and streaming platforms can’t?

VDF is on its own server with a custom burner-built website and not subject to anyone else’s Terms of Service.

Can I show 18+ content through my external urls or platform that I import into VDF?

No. Users of external platforms such as Twitch, Tik Tok, and Facebook Live are still subject to the Terms of Service agreement of their platform, which generally prohibits 18+ content.

How do I identify my content as 18+?

Forms to create events, rooms, theme camps, and upload art all have a check box to mark your content as 18+.

Is Nudity allowed in an All Ages room?

Yes. Nudity of a non-erotic nature is allowed in All Ages rooms, just like you might see at a physical Burn.

Why do I have to have my camera on in an 18+ room?

When 18+ content is currently occurring, all participants in the video room must have their camera enabled to reasonably ensure no minors are present. If no 18+ content is occurring, then cameras do not have to be enabled.
